Chasing Vermeer received generally positive reviews. Other books in the series. Petra looked worried, but doesn’t look as scared as Calder. Again Petra finds the painting and finds an injured, but alive, Calder. What a great idea!! Helquist the Lemony Snicket books compounds the fun with drawings that incorporate the pentomino idea to supply visual clues as well. It is probably the most apropos quote because it hinges almost entirely on the readers’ familiarity with and reaction to Dan Brown’s novel. Mar 31, Julie rated it really liked it.
Publisher’s Weekly Review Puzzles nest within puzzles in this ingeniously plotted and lightly delivered first novel that, revolving around the heist of a Vermeer painting, also touches on the nature of cjasing, truth, art and similarly meaty topics. All of the exploration of the coincidence of 12 and the prediction of pentominoes and the appearance of the Vermeer painting in Petra’s dream — what. Balliett explores some ideas that really weren’t interesting to me, and they took up a large part of the narrative.
This is also an excellent book to introduce for an art lesson.

For starters the two main characters, Calder Pillay and Valliet Andalee, are perceived to be extremely geeky. Copyrights Chasing Vermeer from BookRags. Seemingly unrelated events connect, an eccentric old woman seeks their company, and an invaluable Vermeer painting disappears.
I think this book will make a good movie because it would be bring attention to others and it’ll be funny.
Chasing Vermeer Summary & Study Guide
Hussey’s assignments and dialogue even came from Balliett’s classroom. I loved parts of this book and disliked other parts, so there you are; the epilogue ending is particularly bad in vemreer “I don’t know how to work all this into the plot, so here, this is what happened” kind of way.
You find out at the end of the book that these three people in fact live in the same area and are related in many ways.
What a great idea!! Helquist, who has illustrated the Lemony Snickett books, outdoes himself here, providing an interactive mystery in his pictures. Well all I hear in other classes at school is Chasing Vermeer sucks and we have to do blje packet on it and read it I’m so nervous I want to know the mystery and clues and the code what vdrmeer it?
Their enthusiasm led to wonderful, dense lessons and we learned a lot about art and the Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago. Balliett also casing lots of plot twists and red herrings along the way.
My husband and I met and were married on Nantucket, lived there year-round for another 10 years, and had our two children there.
I have rights again. A major event in the story is when they found the painting and solved the mystery. The two protagonists are very likable and I was interested in the glowingly positive representation of the Chicago School constructivist education model.
We display the minimum age for which content is developmentally appropriate.

I was born in New York City and grew up playing in Central Park, getting my share of scraped knees, and riding many public buses and subways. They learn that the man is Xavier Glitts, also known as Glitter Man, who was cjasing as Tommy’s stepfather under the name Fred Steadman. Vermeer, Johannes, Juvenile fiction. Chasing Vermeer is classified in the mystery genre, although it was described by Liz Szabla of Scholastic as “a puzzle, wrapped in a mystery, disguised as an adventure, and delivered as vermerr work of art.
It’s OK to make a reader work for a mystery’s solution, but “work” usually means “think,” not “physically get up off the couch to grab a writing utensil. And then the two philosophize about the meaning of of love, life, “What is art?
You could then have students create their own paintings, pick a student to hide one of them, and then have the class try and piece together the clues.
I think the code breaking is clever and enjoyed looking at the code in the pictures although I didn’t bother solving it. One thing that I especially loved is that I got a very clear visualization of what the actual lady in A Lady Writing looked like. Chasing Vermmer was an excellent book. To accomplish this, she peppers her story with seemingly random events that eventually come together in a startling, delightful pattern. It would also allow them to apply what they learned in the class to the novel.
